Best Practices: Pinterest

Pinterest is a platform where users curate articles, images, blog posts, etc. that inspire them. These items are "pinned" to virtual inspiration boards. Many users create boards for craft ideas, recipes, favorite TV/movies, and even fantasy football! While the main user-base on Pinterest is female, the platform has a strong male membership as well! Using Pinterest in a professional capacity is a great way to showcase your creative side and promote your department.

Get the most out of your professional Pinterest account by...

  • Create a range of boards that showcase your department's personality. Events, projects, research, and field-related items are all great topics for Boards!
  • Give your boards clear names so people can tell what’s on them, just keep it to 20 characters or less so it doesn’t get cut off. Don’t forget the description, which can inspire people to follow your boards!
  • Try Pinning a handful of Pins at once that together tell a story or capture the imagination.
  • Pin at least once a day to keep your audience engaged.
  • Cross-promote content! If you're promoting it on another social media platform, be sure to promote it on Pinterest as well!
  • Don't just Pin your own stuff! Find articles, videos, or blogs that are related to your department or field, and use Pinterest to promote exploration into your community.
  • Create Pins with high-quality images.
  • Vertically oriented pins are typically recommended over horizontal ones, since Pinterest doesn't limit how tall images can be.
  • Don't use too much text! Less is more, especially when it comes to this visual platform.
  • Be sure to include links in your Pins to provide users with ways they can continue to connect with you.
  • Incorporate calls-to-action on your websites, encouraging users to Pin your images to their own boards.
  • Use thoughtful, rich captions on Pins you create. This will make them more searchable and more likely to have engagement!
  • Create group boards and invite others to participate!

Pinterest Image Sizing Guide

  • Profile Image: 165 x 165
  • Pin Sizes: 236 x (Pinterest does not limit a pin's length.)
  • Board Display: 220 x 150

Incorporating Pinterest into Your Website
