Best Practices: Instagram


Instagram is consistently rated by students as one of their most frequently used social media platforms. It is an online, mobile image- and- video-sharing social networking service that enables users to take pictures and videos, apply filters (available within the app), and share them on a variety of social media platforms (including Facebook, Twitter, & Tumblr). Instagram is a great platform for sharing images and short videos of events in your department, campus beauty shots, and visuals of your day-to-day activities.

Before you start an Instagram account, make sure you've considered...

Do you have enough visual content to warrant creating an Instagram account? What events, locations, or people do you plan to feature? Make sure your content is varied! Use your account to provide the user with a visual tour of your department, so be sure to post high-quality, engaging images and videos.

A user's Instagram feed is an aggregated feed featuring every post from all of the accounts he/she follows. Will you be posting frequently enough to have your message resonate? Web Services recommends at least three posts per week.

Who is your audience and what are the chances they will see or engage with your message? Instagram accounts are recommended for departments with students who are highly socially interactive and frequent opportunities for visual content creation.

Content on Instagram is frequently aggregated with the use of hashtags. For example, some hashtags WKU may include on a post are #WKU, #GoTops, or #Hilltoppers. What hashtag will you create to have associated with your department? (Hint: We recommend using "WKU"in any hashtag related to an official university presence. This helps your content stay limited to WKU. ex: #WKUHistory #WKUPsychSciences, etc.)

Adding an Instagram Feed to Your Site

Adding an Instagram feed to a website can enhance a site's visual content without creating extra work for the webmaster. Instagram's Support Blog has instructions for sharing your posts to a webpage. Additionally, Web Services is available to assist when needed.
