Description of Tutor Counselor (Academic Year) Position:

Upward Bound is seeking applications for tutors for each of the following areas: English Composition, Biology, Chemistry, History, Mathematics, and Spanish. Must have competency to assist high school students in general, honors, and AP sections. Tutor Counselors provide once-a-month tutoring to high school participants during Upward Bound Saturday Sessions. In addition, Tutor Counselors also serve as mentors to participants.

Work Schedule: One Saturday per month. Hours vary, but are typically within 7:30 am-3:00 pm.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Tutor students in areas of academic expertise.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and report on students’ academic progress.
  • Provide assistance reviewing class material and supporting test preparation.
  • Motivate students to aspire to pursue higher education
  • Maintain a professional relationships with students.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Participate in cultural and social program activities (teambuilding, field trips, college tours), as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Must have a cumulative 2.75 GPA or higher
  • Must have demonstrated competency in one of the following areas: English Composition, Biology, Chemistry, History, Mathematics, and Spanish.
  • Must have strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
  • Must be mature and have excellent professional judgment

Desired Skills:

  • Prior tutoring experience
  • Prior experience working with low-income and/or first-generation students


  • $8.25 per hour

The summer progrm Tutor Counselor (Summer Program) application will open on February 1, 2020 for the 2020 summer program.
