Reinvesting in Teacher Education Initiative

The Reinvesting in Teacher Education initiative is making significant progress. Based on the collaborative efforts of The Core Curriculum Committee and with approval of the School of Teacher Education faculty, the following framework is in place to develop the Core Curriculum:

Five Core Courses:

  1. Intro to Teaching

  2. Knowing and Learning

  3. Behavior/Classroom Management

  4. Differentiation and Diversity

  5. Assessment

Three Integrated Themes:

  1. Technology

  2. Literacy

  3. Professionalism

The sub-committee phase of the curriculum process is now underway. The 6 sub-committees (one for each of the respective core courses and one for the three integrated themes) include faculty associated with Teacher Education from across the university as well as representation from local school districts who have expertise in these respective areas. The sub-committees will do detailed work for this framework, working towards the development of course proposals.

It is important to note, the content of this model can (and perhaps will) change during the sub-committee phase, with modifications occurring based on the sub-committee’s work and continued feedback from across the university and districts in the region.

Charge for Core Course Sub-Committees:

  • Nominate and elect a sub-committee chair
  • Develop learning objectives and outcomes
  • Create content outline (keeping syllabus in mind)
  • Offer textbook recommendations
  • Recommendation to develop new course or revise existing course
  • Consider number of fieldwork hours for respective Core Course.
  • Sub-Committee Chair coordinates with/reports to Dr. Szymanski, Interim Assistant Director, who will work with these Chairs to write the curriculum proposal.

Charge for Integrated Themes Sub-Committee:

  • Work with Dr. Maxwell, sub-committee chair.
  • Think creatively about different modules that could be integrated into core courses and throughout courses across students’ respective majors.
  • Consider a variety of options for course delivery.
  • Explore how to incorporate experts related to these themes across the curriculum as well as possibilities for co-teaching.
  • Consider additional themes that you might be integrated to enhance students’ experience.
  • Dr. Maxwell will stay in touch with the other sub-committee chairs, Dr. Szymanski (Interim Assistant Director), and Interim Director keep each other informed/updated on the work across committees.

Here, we include the current schedule (additional meeting times forthcoming) and composition of each sub-committee (these sub-committees are open to all to attend):
