WKU Office of Sustainability

While diverse and multi-faceted, the initiatives, policies, and programs of WKU are united by conviction and a deep sense of purpose. We understand the importance of reducing college costs, increasing completion rates, fostering civic and community skills, and ensuring that our graduates find degree-related employment. At WKU, we are unified in our diverse efforts to create a practical and educational approach toward the pillars of sustainability. As an office, we feel a moral obligation to our students, our local and global communities, and the planet to do our part in mitigating environmental problems through sustainability initiatives and by training our students to prepare for crucial emerging issues. In 2008, the WKU Office of Sustainability was created and the University’s first Sustainability Coordinator was hired. Since then, WKU has dramatically reduced its environmental footprint through the implementation and evaluation of policies and programs in all areas of facilities management and campus services. Our campus aims to be a model of sustainable practices and cost-effective measures to create a green community from which students, faculty, and staff can live and learn. Our strength lies in our mission as an educational institution. Our academic programs address the science, social, economic, and political aspects of environmental change and sustainability, providing both disciplinary depth and interdisciplinary perspective-taking that pave the way for our students to get jobs and to make positive change in their communities.
