First Steps to Begin Your Journey

Excited to embark on your journey From the Hilltop to the World®? Follow these simple steps to begin the process.

The Office of Study Abroad and Global Learning is here to help every step of the way! If you have any questions or concerns about studying abroad, don't hesitate to contact us any time at study.abroad@wku.edu or 270-745-5334.

STEP 1: Explore Programs and Funding Options

You can research available programs online by using search tools in the catalog of study abroad programs, which can be accessed from our homepage by clicking the Find My Program button on the left side of the page.

Visit the Funding Your Experience Abroad page for information about scholarships and financial aid for study abroad.

Other resources during the exploring phase:

  • Start an Exploring Application by clicking the "Request Advising" button on any program brochure page to obtain helpful information as you are planning to study abroad.
  • Study Abroad Fair - An info fair is held each semester and is a great way to browse programs and speak with program representatives and faculty leaders. Visit the WKU SAGL Calendar to find out whether a fair is coming up.
  • Other SAGL Events - Visit the WKU SAGL Calendar for dates and times of events where you could obtain more information..

STEP 2: Meet with an Advisor (optional but strongly recommended)

Study Abroad Advisors can help you as you try to decide on a program that fits your academic needs, career goals, and budget, and they can share details about funding options, how to navigate the course approval process, or address any other questions or concerns you have about study abroad.

Peer Advisors - SAGL Student Representatives, who have recently studied abroad and are trained to assist you as you explore study abroad options, are available Monday-Friday for walk-in advising, generally during the middle of the day. Stop by our office (HCIC 1014) to view the peer advisor schedule posted just outside our office and meet with a Student Rep.

Study Abroad Advisors - To schedule a meeting with a staff advisor, select the appropriate advisor below and login with your NetID and password to choose an appointment time that works for you.

  • Krista Erickson - Advisor for programs in Europe (except Spain), Africa (except Morocco), and the Semester at Sea program
  • Katherine Hale - Advisor for programs in Latin America, Spain, the Middle East, Asia, Oceania (Australia, New Zealand, Fiji), and North America. Katherine also advises on the International Student Teaching program.

STEP 3: Meet with Your Academic Advisor

It's important to keep your academic advisor in the loop about your study abroad plans to make sure you stay on track to graduation, especially if you plan to spend a semester or academic year abroad. Your advisor may be able to assist you with selecting the best courses and obtaining approval for course equivalencies if your program offers transfer credit.

STEP 4: Select a Program and Start Applying

Once you have decided on the program that best fits your needs, you can start your application by clicking the “Apply Now” button on the program page. Please note that there is a non-refundable $150 study abroad application fee that will be charged to your Topnet account after you stubmit your application.

After clicking the “Apply Now” button, you will be instructed to log in using your WKU NetID and password. Follow the instructions on the screen. Read and complete all pre-decision materials. If you run into any difficulty with the application please call us at 270-745-5334 or e-mail study.abroad@wku.edu or your Study Abroad Advisor.

After submitting your application, a Study Abroad Advisor will review your application and check your GPA and disciplinary record for eligibility. Once you have been accepted, you will be notified to return to your study abroad application, view the decision, and complete the remaining post-decision (pre-departure) materials. Unless you are going on a WKU faculty-led program, you will also need to complete an additional application through the study abroad provider website or partner institution. Don't forget to apply for all scholarships for which you are eligible by their respective deadlines!
