Intent: The WELL Light concept promotes exposure to light and aims to create lighting environments that are optimal for visual, mental and biological health.

Intent: Provide access to indoor light exposure and light education.
This WELL feature requires projects to ensure appropriate light exposure in indoor environments by using daylighting or electric lighting strategies. To encourage users to seek light exposure on their own, projects are required to provide users with education about the importance of light for health.
- Ensure Indoor Light Exposure: Transparent envelope glazing area is no less than 7% of the floor area for each floor level. VLT of envelope glazing is greater than 40%.
- Promote Lighting Education: Educational signage is placed at high traffic points around the space. At least two of the resources provided for Part 2: Health and Wellness Education of Feature C01: Health and Wellness Awareness cover information on circadian rhythm, sleep hygiene, age-related increase in light requirements and/or importance of daylight exposure to circadian and mental health.
Intent: Provide visual comfort and enhance acuity for all users through electric lighting.
This WELL feature requires projects to provide appropriate illuminances on work planes for regular users of all age groups while taking into account light levels required for the tasks performed in the space.
- Light Levels for Visual Acuity: All indoor and outdoor spaces (including transition areas) comply with illuminance recommendations specified in IES Lighting Handbook 10th Edition.
- A lighting plan details the below: Tasks or activities considered for visual lighting design in the project. All tasks and activities regularly undertaken by occupants are considered; Height of work plane or other target of illumination; Age ranges for the majority of occupants.
Intent: Support circadian health through interventions using electric lighting
This WELL feature requires projects to provide users with appropriate exposure to light for maintaining circadian health and aligning the circadian rhythm with the day-night cycle.
- Lighting for the Circadian System: Electric lighting is used to achieve light levels shown in the table below as measured on the vertical plane at eye level of the occupant. The light levels are achieved at lease between the hours of 9 a.m. and 1p.m. and maybe lowered after 8p.m. The project achieves at least 180 EML [163 melanopic equivalent daylight D65] with electric light and at least 2 points in Feature L05: Enhanced Daylight Access.
Intent: Minimize visual discomfort caused by glare from daylight and electric light.
This WELL feature requires projects to manage glare by using a combination of strategies such as calculating of glare, choosing appropriate light fixtures for the space and using shading techniques.
- Lighting for the Circadian System: All exterior envelope glazing has shading. Lobbies are excluded. The shading is controllable by the occupants to prevent glare. All shades are raised or retracted manually at least twice per week.
- Manage Glare from Electric Lighting: All fixtures have a luminance of less than 10,000 cd/m2.
Intent: Support circadian and psychological health through indoor daylight exposure and outdoor views.
This WELL feature requires projects to design spaces to integrate daylight into indoor environments so that daylight may be used for visual tasks along with electric lighting. It also provides individuals with a connection to outdoor spaces through view windows.
- Implement Enhanced Daylight Plan: 70% of all workstations are within 7.5 m [25 ft] of transparent envelope glazing or atria. Visible light transmittance (VLT) of transparent glazing is greater than 40%.
- Ensure Views: If at ground floor, distance from fenestration to roadway is at least 7.5 m [25 ft] from the exterior of the glazing; Views with a vertical view angle of at least 30 degrees from occupant facing forward or sideways provide a direct line of sight to the ground or sky.
