Dr. Smith is an Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing at WKU. She earned her Associate of Science (ADN) degree from Kentucky Wesleyan College, her Bachelor of Science (BSN) degree from Western Kentucky University, her Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree from the University of Louisville and her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree from the University of Southern Indiana.
Dr. Smith has been engaged in nursing education for more than 25 years. She began her teaching career at Kentucky Wesleyan College and has taught at Bellarmine University, Murray State University, Lindsey Wilson College and Western Kentucky University. In addition to teaching, she has served as program administer and held various leadership positions in higher education. Dr. Smith’s teaching has focused on adult health nursing (med-surg), community and population health, nursing leadership, management and administration, evidence based practice, research and professional issues relevant to nursing practice.
Dr. Smith is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society, American Nurses Association, Kentucky Nurses Association, Faith Community Nursing, Faith Community Nursing International, Westburg Institute for Faith Community Nursing, Health Ministries Association, and the Kentucky Rural Health Association. Dr. Smith is an alumni Fellow (2015-2016) of the AACN Leadership for Academic Nursing Program (LANP).
Dr. Smith’s research interests include health disparities, vulnerable populations, health ministry, clergy health, nursing education, community engagement and student success.
Currently, Dr. Smith teaches in the pre-licensure and the graduate program and holds Associate Faculty Status with the Graduate School at WKU.
