Employees are issued one or more technology accounts to access WKU IT systems and services. NetID accounts are automatically generated for employees when they become “active” in the Banner HR system. To look up your NetID and set a password, go to www.wku.edu/it/accounts. Use your NetID and password to access a wide range of IT services including email/calendar, myWKU, TopNet, Blackboard, WKU InfoView reporting, network file storage, wireless, computer labs, and more.
IT Policies and Security
All employees are responsible for keeping their accounts secure and for regularly reviewing the current IT policies at www.wku.edu/it/policies. These policies contain important information about sensitive data handling, information security, accounts and access, and many of the programs mentioned in this brochure. An IT security bulletin is released quarterly to provide additional information about these topics and to remind all employees to review these policies.
myWKU provides “one stop” single sign-on access to many applications such as TopNet, Banner, WKU InfoView, Blackboard, and more without having to login to each one individually. Gain instant access to myWKU content such as links, directory search, bookmarks, and other common resources and tools. Login to myWKU at my.wku.edu
Banner is the main record keeping system for all academic and administrative information. Employees who need Banner access will be assigned a Banner account and must attend training. You may access Banner at banner.wku.edu. For further information, contact WKU Technology Support.
Email and Calendar
Your email/calendar account is automatically generated with your NetID account when you become an active employee. You are responsible for checking and maintaining your WKU email/calendar account as these are heavily utilized for University business communications and scheduling. Access your email and calendar using your NetID via myWKU, Outlook, or email.wku.edu
TopNet is a web-based, secure gateway for accessing administrative and academic information related to registration, teaching, advising, finance, personal employee records and more. Access to restricted TopNet information is dependent upon your job responsibilities and requires completed training. Login to TopNet with your NetID via myWKU (my.wku.edu) or topnet.wku.edu. WKU InfoView is a web-based reporting tool available to faculty and staff. Users have the ability to schedule, view, print and export Crystal Reports developed by Enterprise Applications and Programming. All employees have access to WKU infoview.wku.edu. Restricted folders are accessible after training. You may access WKU InfoView through myWKU or infoview.wku.edu. For further information, contact WKU Technology Support.
WKU File Shares
When on campus, login to your University-issued computer to access network file storage, mapped as P: S: or U: drives. The P: drive is for individual, University-related storage and cannot be shared. The S: and U: drives are shared storage to which you will have various levels of access depending on your job responsibilities. You can access network file storage via the web also using MyStuff on or off campus. Access MyStuff via myWKU (my.wku.edu) or at mystuff.wku.edu.
Training is available to faculty and staff on a wide variety of technology topics, including Blackboard, Respondus, MS Office, Adobe products and more. The face-to-face workshops calendar can be found at www.wku.edu/it/training. Video tutorials on many of these same topics are accessible anytime, anywhere at www.wku.edu/it/videotutorials Self-paced online workshops can be accessed by clicking the IT Training tab within Blackboard at blackboard.wku.edu.
Blackboard is a system many professors use to offer course materials, class discussions, multimedia files, tests, quizzes, etc. Many campus organizations and groups use Blackboard to provide content and materials to their users. All WKU users have Blackboard accounts; however, training is required for course instructors and organization leaders. Blackboard is accessible through myWKU or blackboard.wku.edu.
Technology Resource Center (TRC)
The TRC is a hands-on digital media facility, located in MMTH 257. Specialized equipment and software are available along with knowledgeable support staff. A wide variety of equipment, such as cameras, recorders and projectors, is available for loan. These resources can be utilized to create outstanding digital multimedia projects. - Data Network: WKU operates a comprehensive data network providing high-speed wired and wireless access in all administrative, academic, and residential facilities. Free guest wireless is available to campus visitors. Visit www.wku.edu/it/network to learn more.
- Cellular Resources: Cellular discount program information, video tutorials, and international travel tips can be found at www.wku.edu/it/cellular.
- Sign Up for Emergency Text Alerts: Several mechanisms are in place to alert the campus community of emergency or critical situations that require no action by you such as outdoor warning systems and WKU website emergency webcasts. However, you must sign up to receive text (SMS) alerts. Login to topnet.wku.edu and sign up under the “Personal Information” tab. Text alerts include weather, crime, or school closing related notifications.
Audio and Video Collaboration Services
Classrooms and conference rooms located at each WKU campus are available to provide video conferencing services for your collaborative communication needs on a local, regional, and international level. Desktop video conferencing is available to provide real-time, online communications from the convenience of your desk or mobile device. Audio conferencing and webinar coordination services are also available.
Faculty and staff are able to download free software and purchase select software titles from the WKU Software Center website at www.wku.edu/it/sms. Quotes and purchasing information on unlisted software applications at educational pricing may be requested by submitting a request online via our Service Catalog at td.wku.edu/TDClient. Faculty, staff, and students are also able to purchase software for their personal use.
Student Technology Centers
There are seven Student Technology Centers (STC) on the main campus and one at each Regional Campus and South Campus. The Mass Media and Technology Hall STC is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, during the fall and spring semesters. Visit www.wku.edu/it/labs for more information about lab hours and locations.
The WKU IT Division works with Apple and Dell to maintain institutional purchasing programs for the purchase of standard computers that will be owned by WKU and paid for with University funds. The recommended configurations are priced to reflect University discounts, tax exempt benefits, and are configured to meet all minimum standards for support and compatibility. The WKU IT Division also maintains a discount purchasing programs for faculty, staff, students and other members of the WKU community for personal purchases of Apple and Dell computers and peripherals.
