Housing Restart | Frequently Asked Questions


WKU HRL has increased the number of move-in days and options for students to promote social distancing. 

Students have three (3) move-in options to choose from - a timeslot is required for all students:  

  1. Top Drop & Go, August 1-11 - Students can bring their belongings to campus early and return for their program or the beginning of the semester.

  2. Special Programs Move-In (H4, ISEC Academy, sorority recruitment, M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan, etc.)

  3. August 20-24 - students can move in just in time for the beginning of the fall 2020 semester.

To sign up for a move in timeslot, follow these steps:

  1. Visit the WKU Housing Portal at wku.edu/housing/portal
  2. Choose “Move In Timeslots” from the navigation menu
  3. Select a date and time

Students may bring helpers for the move in process. Social distancing from staff and others moving in, hand washing/sanitizing, and face masks are required.

Move in carts will be available, though they will not be disinfected by WKU staff between each use. Students and families should use the move in carts at their own discretion. Students are permitted and encouraged to bring their own move in supplies, carts, dollies, etc.

The residence halls will remain open until December 10, 2020 at 10 AM (extended living halls - Hilltopper, Northeast, and Rodes Harlin - will remain open during winter break). 

During Thanksgiving Break, all halls will remain open, for students who do not want to travel back and forth to their home communities. The halls will be accessible only by electronic ID access during this time. Additionally, those halls that have traditionally closed during the break, will have limited front desk staffing/hours for mail pick up and there will be campus on-call staff available for any questions or emergencies.

 

Residents are required to wear a mask in all common areas of the residence hall.

Masks are not required in the residence hall bedrooms. Roommates are considered members of a “household,” in which a mask is not required.

Each resident will be able to check in one guest at a time, following the typical visitation hours. Additionally, no more than four people should be present in a residence hall room at a time. 

Visitation officially begins August 20, 2020 at 10 AM. 

Visitation Policy

  • Wear a cloth face covering that covers your nose and mouth in all public settings.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces within your room.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
  • Practice social distancing in common areas or wear a mask when social distancing is not an option.
  • Limit travel outside of campus to reduce potential exposure to self and other communities.
  • Follow all posted signs in the residence hall and on campus regarding mitigation strategies to reduce the risks.
  • Limit the number of riders on elevators. Elevator maximum capacities will be posted. If an elevator is at full capacity, wait for the next elevator to arrive or utilize the stairs, if able. 
Housing rates are based on a full semester and are calculated using the residence hall opening and closing dates and are not based on a student's checkout date. 

All full-time undergraduate students are required to live on campus for two years. Some exemptions apply. Students can learn more about the required housing policy and the exemption request process at https://www.wku.edu/housing/apply/requirement-exemptions.php

Effective response to a communicable disease requires early reporting, rapid assessment, and implementation of quarantine measures as directed by qualified health officials. WKU has implemented a dedicated reporting and support system to facilitate this process.

The contact telephone number, 270-745-2019, is answered by designated, qualified staff on a 24-hour basis.

A standardized reporting process assures that appropriate information is requested and gathered. All data gathered will be confidential per the requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).

A plan for quarantine of residential students has been developed. If needed, quarantine spaces will be available based on CDC and local Health Department recommendations.

Yes, students may return home for a required quarantine.

Students residing on campus who elected to stay on campus for their quarantine will be housed in designated spaces on campus. WKU Housing and Residence Life has assigned a coordinator to support students required to quarantine.

Medical care will be provided by Graves Gilbert Clinic at their on-campus location or through telehealth with an on-call provider.

WKU Counseling staff will make regular contact with the students.

Aramark has developed a web-based system for students quarantined on campus to make meal selections that will be managed through the student’s meal plan or other existing university account. Meals will be packaged individually and delivered by a staff member. Other necessities, such as toiletries, that are found in campus stores will be available for delivery.

If a student residing in on-campus housing is contacted by public health and directed to quarantine, and are asymptomatic, they will initially remain in their assigned room. WKU will evaluate the case with direction from public health and make a decision on appropriate housing locations. 

 Students who are symptomatic, or test positive for COVID-19, will be immediately moved to a designated quarantine location on campus.  Provisions have been made to assist the students with a relocation to campus quarantine space, and to support their needs throughout the quarantine period as previously noted.

In all cases where students are directed by public health to quarantine, they will have the option to return home for the quarantine period.

WKU students can still expect a rich and robust out-of-the-classroom experience in WKU residence halls. Residential programming will include opportunities to experience meaningful connections with their floormates in small group settings. While those experiences will be on a smaller scale than what students may have experienced in the past, we are confident that the intentional small group settings will allow students to connect with each other and make friends.

  • Elevators will have a smaller occupancy limit.
  • Community bathrooms and common areas will be cleaned more frequently. Those areas will be labeled with the last time the area was cleaned and will provide a phone number to call if the student believes an area needs attention.
  • Students are able to check-in one guest at a time and are encouraged to gather in outdoor spaces when possible.
  • Common areas will have occupancy limits to ensure social distancing.
  • Students are required to wear a face mask in all common areas.
  • Residents will complete a revised roommate agreement in which they are able to share any concerns and agree upon conditions related to Covid-19. With the space in the room, residents will be able to social distance with the understanding that they may come in contact with their roommate - which will be considered a member of their household.
  • Hand sanitizer stations will be available in all residence hall lobbies.
  • Residential students will receive a Big Red Restart Kit that includes a face mask, hand sanitizer, and disinfectant wipes.
  • Students will see plexiglass barriers at the front desks and increased signage to notify and remind them of new procedures (visitation, mask requirements, occupancy limits, hand washing, etc.).
  • Students are required to wear a mask in all common areas.
  • Visitation - students may check-in one guest at a time.
  • Some buildings, depending on their setup, may have to utilize one-way paths or enter/exit-only doors.
  • Some common areas will have their furniture reduced or re-arranged to encourage social distancing in study rooms and lobbies.
