What is Honors?
The purpose of the Honors College is to offer high-achieving young scholars the environment of a small, highly selective college, while providing the resources and benefits of a large public university. This combination of outstanding research opportunities with an intimate and rigorous intellectual environment not only produces nationally recognized scholars and globally engaged leaders it changes lives. Equally as important, the Honors College experience is helping these scholars make their educational and career dreams come true.
The Honors experience all begins with the academics of the Honors College. The small class size in Honors classes encourages discussion and relationship building between students and faculty while taking learning far beyond the bounds of a text book. This is taken to the extreme with colloquia classes, discussion based classes offered on a variety of topics each semester. Academics don't stay in the classroom; the pinnacle of the Honors academic experience is the Capstone Experience/Thesis project. Through a CE/T project, students explore in-depth a topic of their choice and set their own direction and goals with the help of an advisor in their discipline.
The academic experience of the Honors College isn't limited solely to the bounds of WKU's campus, or even to the borders of the United States. Honors students are highly encouraged to study abroad and are given support to bring their ideal study abroad experience within reach.
While the breadth of opportunities available to Honors students is extensive, the tuition costs still match those of any public university. In 2010, 187 of our 297 incoming freshmen received full tuition or higher scholarships through WKU.
