Hello, New Friend!
Welcome to the Mahurin Honors College and Western Kentucky University! I’m so excited you’re a new member of the Hilltopper Family, and I can’t wait for an amazing H4! My name is Dawson McCoun, and I am a junior majoring in public relations and political science. After graduation, I hope to pack my bags and continue to study or work abroad!
This is my second year as an H4 counselor and I know it will be one of the best even if there are a few changes to maximize our health and safety. H4 is going to be your first taste of college so I encourage you to learn all you can and ask lots of questions! Ask about all the clubs and organizations you can join to make your time on the Hill the best it can be. I serve as an HonorsTopper and Peer Mentor for the Mahurin Honors College. I am a member of the Potter College Dean’s Council of Students, Student Government Association, and many other activities across campus. I know getting involved has made my WKU experience incredible and I’m confident it will do the same for you!
H4 is also a great time to learn about the benefits of being a member of the Mahurin Honors College. The college has the resources to make studying abroad, research, and internships accessible to every Honors Scholar! It even helped me get the resources to study abroad in the United Kingdom at Harlaxton College. I attended last spring and had the opportunity to travel all over Europe! Unfortunately, it was cut short when COVID-19 said “go home.” Nonetheless, I have some great stories about studying abroad and fleeing a global pandemic in a matter of days. Feel free to ask!
My biggest piece of advice is to open yourself up to all the opportunities that come your way. Make this a time to say “yes” and push yourself outside your comfort zone. However, I implore you to remain conscious of your needs and try not to get overwhelmed. Step back and take care of yourself before tackling everything else. Remember – you are and always will be your most important commitment!
I am so excited to meet each and every one of you, and I cannot wait to see you thrive. Congratulations on starting this next chapter of your life! Get your reusable water bottle and comfortable shoes ready – it’s time to start climbing the Hill! If you have any questions or want to get lunch with someone on campus, feel free to reach out!
