My name is Dawson McCoun, and I am so excited to be your counselor at H4! I am an incoming sophomore from Frankfort, Kentucky, and I am currently majoring in Political Science and Public Relations. This is my first H4 – I transferred to WKU the second semester of my freshman year — and I am so excited to share this experience with you!
Getting involved at WKU is one of the best ways to find your niche and succeed on the Hill. One of the best things about getting involved, especially at WKU, is there’s always something for everybody! In just a semester at Western, I have been able to get involved in a variety of organizations and events on campus. I am a Senator-at-Large in the Student Government Association Senate, a member of WKU Young Democrats, attend a variety of events sponsored by the Department of Political Science, and (of course) a proud member of the Mahurin Honors College. I am also looking forward to getting involved in many more clubs, organizations, and events this upcoming fall semester!
The Mahurin Honors College is a great way to meet new people and develop yourself into the individual you want to be once you graduate. The Honors College has so many resources for study abroad, research, and internship opportunities that are available to you as a member of it. Along with the benefits of being a member, you will make so many connections and friendships that make WKU even more special to you.
This upcoming year will be a big adjustment for all of you. My biggest piece of advice is to open yourself up to all the opportunities that come your way, but I hope you also remember your own needs. Try to get as involved as possible but stay conscious of not getting overwhelmed or overcommitting yourself. Take to step back and take care of yourself before tackling everything else. College can be very hectic time and you might forget that you are your most important commitment!
I am so excited to meet each one of you and see you thrive on the Hill! If have any questions or just want someone to get lunch with on campus, feel free to ask me! I hope you have a great year at WKU, and, as always, Go Tops!
All the best,
