My name is Baleigh Lawson and I am SO excited to be your H4 counselor!
I'm from Stanford, KY, which is a small town located about an hour south of Lexington. I will be a senior in the fall and I'm majoring in Mathematics and Science and Math Education. I'm part of an incredible program called SKyTeach and plan on becoming a high school mathematics teacher after I graduate. I've always had a passion for education and hope to instill that same love of learning into my future students. I'm very close to my family and spend a lot of time hanging out with them, as well as my friends. I also enjoy reading, watching Netflix, eating ice cream, antique shopping, and cheering on the Tops at every football game!
I attended H4 my freshman year and I am so thankful that I did. There is no other way I would have wanted to start my college experience! Throughout the week, I learned so much from both the counselors and my peers. I still apply some of the advice that was given, like how to manage time or set goals, to my daily life. I also met one of my very best friends there, along with so many others that I’m still close with. Looking back, I can see that the community I found at H4 was just a glimpse of the community that I would find over the next few years at WKU. It’s so comforting to know that at any given time, I can go into the Mahurin Honors College or any other building on campus and see someone I know. Being a part of this close-knit community has made WKU feel more like home and the transition to college much easier.
One piece of advice that I heard at H4 that has been invaluable to my WKU experience is to get involved. During my freshman year, I joined a sorority and an on-campus ministry. During my sophomore and junior years, I joined Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE Club), the SKyTeach student organization, two academic organizations, and the HonorsToppers. My college experience has been positively impacted by each of these organizations and I’ve had so much fun being a part of them. Whatever your interests may be, I cannot encourage you enough to seek out clubs and organizations that appeal to you. They provide great opportunities to form new friendships, develop leadership skills, and serve the campus community.
H4 is one of my favorite events of the entire year and the best way to kick off your college experience! If you have any questions about H4, WKU, or college in general, feel free to contact me! I can't wait to meet you!! Go Tops!
