Tips for Faculty Mentors
- Read over the Evaluation Rubric and Criteria early. These forms provide guidance about the Honors College’s expectations for CE/Ts.
- Contact the CE/T Coordinator if you have any concerns about the process.
- CE/T students most often encounter trouble when they have not been in contact with their advisors. They may have trouble breaking a large project into manageable pieces. Have your student set small goals and meet with you to discuss progress toward completing those goals.
- If your student stops making progress or drops out of contact, let the CE/T Coordinator know, and the Honors College will work to get the student back on track.
- Students are often very nervous about the defense. They do not know what to expect. The Honors College requires that the defense last for one hour, but beyond that, the faculty mentor should lead the defense, guided by disciplinary standards. Talk with your student early about what to expect and how to prepare.

- To acknowledge the contributions of faculty members like you, the Honors College offers primary CE/T advisors a professional development grant of $150 for each student who has successfully completed the CE/T process. These funds are distributed the semester after the student completed the CE/T process.
- PD funds can be deposited in your PD account, transferred to your department, or held in the Honors College if you do not have a PD account. The Honors College would be happy to establish a PD account for you once you have accumulated at least $500 in professional development funds. You will receive a letter with further information early in the semester when your funds will be distributed. We will need your index number if you already have a PD account.
A third reader will be assigned by the Honors College to each CE/T project when the Notification of Intent to Defend form is submitted to the Honors College. Third readers serve as representatives of the Honors College. They have typically served on multiple CE/T committees, and it is their job to participate in the defense, ensure fairness, and facilitate discussions of students’ Honors Distinctions and grades. Third readers generally do not contribute substantially to decisions regarding a student’s letter grade unless they are in the same, or a closely related, discipline as the student or the first and second readers cannot reach an agreement on the grade. Third readers, however, play a more substantial role in determining students’ Honors designations.
Third readers should serve as a reference and provide guidance to project advisors and second readers regarding expectations for an Honors CE/T project. Third readers will assist the student and the rest of the committee if a conflict should arise and keep the Honors College informed of any problems or concerns within the CE/T process.
Faculty Check List
- Review the CE/T Proposal. If the proposal meets your approval, sign the CE/T Proposal form. A student must have a signed proposal form on file with the Honors College before they can register for HON 403 and HON 404. The students can deliver this form. Some departments allow students to count CE/T hours toward the major. If you would like to pursue this option, the student must obtain permission from their department.
- Have regular appointments to meet with your CE/T students (every week or every two weeks)
- Students must submit a Notification of Intent to Defend form by the second Friday of classes the semester they expect to defend. This form requires the first and second readers signatures. The students can deliver this form.
- Students must present their CE/T or a portion of their CE/T at an approved conference – Check with the CE/T Coordinator for a list of possible conferences if you do not have a discipline specific conference in mind.
- Once the committee agrees the CE/T is ready to defend, the student must submit a Draft Approval Form to the Honors College. The Draft Approval Form requires all CE/T committee signatures, a polished copy of the CE/T to each reader, and documentation of the conference presentation.

- You will sign all the CE/T Title pages if you are the first reader
- Fill out the Final Evaluation Form and the Evaluation Criteria form.
- A member of the CE/T Committee should bring the title page(s) and the Final Evaluation Form to the Honors College (campus mail, or hand delivery is acceptable)
- Once the Final Submission form, the TopSCHOLAR Copyright permission form, and an electronic version of the CE/T has been submitted to firstname.lastname@example.org by the student, you will be sent an email regarding your Professional Development funds if you are the first reader. These forms are submitted by the student and no action is necessary for the faculty member.
