Welcome to Academics
The Mahurin Honors College at WKU strives to enhance the academic experiences of its scholars by providing opportunities for smaller classes, mentorship and research experiences with faculty, challenging coursework, flexibility in curricula, and meaningful interactions with peers. What happens inside classrooms, of course, is critical to your success, but I encourage you to think about academics more broadly than just the courses you take and the grades you earn.
Your academic development in the Mahurin Honors College is meant to be both deep and broad: we want to help you extend your expertise vertically into an area of academic specialization while simultaneously expanding your knowledge and abilities horizontally across a range of disciplines and perspectives. To do so, honors scholars regularly supplement their coursework with high-impact practices like study abroad programs, internships, community service, grants and fellowships, and senior thesis projects, among other possibilities. Honors scholars understand that academic opportunities are all around them, and sometimes the most impactful ones take place outside traditional classrooms. The Mahurin Honors College wants to help connect you with those opportunities, help you succeed in them, and help you create powerful stories about them.
In short, the Mahurin Honors College sees our scholars as much more than their transcripts. We see them as innovators, problem solvers, international travelers, responsible leaders, and life-long learners. We know all of our scholars will journey down a wide range of interesting and important paths in their lives. They will help shape the world as well as have valuable stories to share with the world. The Mahurin Honors College wants to be part of those stories.
