Graduate Program

Welcome to the History Department's Graduate Program. Your pursuit of a Master's degree will mark your transition from student to scholar. Our faculty's goal is to introduce you to the discipline of history while developing a course of study that will match your individual interests.

Degree Program Options

The Department of History offers a Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in Historythrough its graduate program. The M.A. program is designed to prepare students for the teaching of history on the junior and senior college level and to provide the initial graduate work for those who intend to pursue a doctoral degree (Ph.D.).

The History Department also participates in theMaster of Arts in Education (M.A.E.) program. The M.A.E. program is designed to enhance the preparation of secondary teachers of history who desire to meet certification requirements.

Additionally, the History Department offers a Graduate Certificate in History option within our existing M.A. in History and M.A. in Education programs.  Using existing graduate and "G" courses, students may choose the area in which they will specialize, with the approval of the graduate advisor. Upon the completion of 12 hours, the student would be awarded the certificate.  Students who decide to pursue the M.A. degree in history may use the certificate area as a field of concentration in their M.A. exams.

NOTE: In order to be awarded a Graduate Certificate in History, students must apply and be accepted into the M.A. program
