English 200 Departmental Exam

The English Department recognizes that some students may have already attained the skills and knowledge covered in the English 200 course at WKU and has created a departmental exam as an alternative to taking the course.  The exam measures how well students read, interpret, analyze and write about literature.  Students need to be familiar with concepts covered in introductory literature courses and Modern Language Association (MLA) documentation Style (https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/section/2/11).

The test has 4 parts and students must earn 58/70 total points in order to fulfill the English 200 requirement.  For a description of the exam and a study guide click here http://wku.edu/english/departmental-exams/study_guide_eng_200.pdf .

  • To be eligible to take this exam, a student must be fully matriculated, in good standing and regularly enrolled at WKU.
  • Credits earned in this manner will be recorded on the student’s official transcript as nonresidence credit but will not be considered as part of the normal semester load in the term in which the examination is taken.
  • A student may not register for this exam if enrolled in English 200.
  • A student may not take this exam if they have previously taken English 200 at WKU or another accredited institution.
  • Approximately two weeks after taking the exam, the English Department will email the results to the student and will notify the Registrar if credit is received.

MAT

The Miller Analogies Test (MAT) is a high-level mental abilities test (computer-based) comprised of 120 partial analogies in which candidates are given 60 minutes to complete the exam.

Fluency in the English language and a broad knowledge of literature, philosophy, history, science, mathematics, and fine arts will affect performance. MAT analogies state a correspondence between two things that are otherwise dissimilar. The equation for this is A:B::C:D or A is to B as C is to D.

Below are two examples of MAT type analogies:

1) Grant:2::Hoover:(a. 1, b. 2, c. 3, d. 4)

The answer is a.1. Grant served two terms as President Hoover served one term.

2) I:(a. V, b. X, c. D, d. XX)::C:M

The answer is b. X. This is the Roman numeral for ten. Therefore, I (one) is to X (ten) as C (one-hundred) is to M (one-thousand).

STAMP Assessment

The STAMP assessment measures a test taker’s language ability based on national standards.  Test results will indicate the level of proficiency achieved for each section of the test.  WKU requires students to demonstrate proficiency at the Novice High Level.  The Arabic, Chinese, French, Japanese and Spanish tests have four sections – reading, writing, listening and speaking.  The German and Italian tests have three sections – reading, writing and speaking.  Speakers of Russian, Swahili, and Korean may request a Departmental Exam from Modern Languages.  More information is available online.
