Classes beginning at 4pm today on the WKU Bowling Green campus are canceled. ALL Thursday and Friday classes on all campuses are also canceled. Online classes will proceed as scheduled. WKU offices will be closed on Thursday, with essential personnel reporting.

WKU Owensboro closed at noon today (Wed., 3/4).

WKU Glasgow evening classes that begin at 5 pm today will be canceled and the WKU Glasgow campus will close at 7 pm.

WKU Elizabethtown-Fort Knox campus will close today at 3 pm and will remain closed Thurs., Fri, and Sat., March 5-7.

Program Mission

The mission of the WKU dietetic internship is to prepare competent entry-level dietitians who assume leadership responsibilities within their profession and who are engaged citizens in their communities.

Program Goals and Outcomes

Goal 1: The program will prepare graduates to be competent entry-level dietitians or professionals in fields realted to dietetics.

  • Over a five-year period, 90% of interns who start the program will complete the program within 150% of the program length, which will be 13 months.
  • Over a five-year period, 70% or more of program graduates who sought employment in dietetics will be employed within three months of program comletion.
  • Over a five-year peiod, the pass rate for program graduates taking the registration examination for the first time will be at least 80%  *
  • Over a five-year period, 80% of program graduates who respond to the Alumni Survey will rate themselves at least 4 on a 5-point scale for preparedness for their first dietetic-related position. 
  • Over a five-year peirod, at least 80% of employers who respond to a survey will rate program graduates average or above on the Employer Surveys.

Goal 2:  The program will prepare graduates to be professionally involved and to assume leadership responsibilities in the dietetics profession.

  • Over a five-year period, 60% of graduates who respond to the Alumni Survey will report they are currently members of at least one professional organization.
  • Over a five-year period, 50% of graduates will report attainment of a dietetics-related leadership or management position (i.e., mentoring students, serving as preceptor, elected/appointed position, management position, leadership activites or dietetics committee service).

Goal 3: The program will prepare graduates to be engaged in their communities either professionally or through service activities.

  • Over a five-year period, 80% of graduates who respond to the Alumni Survey will report they participate in one or more community service activities either through their current employment, scholarship or volunteer activities.

Program Description

The Dietetic Internship (DI) at Western Kentucky University (WKU) resides in the Department of Family & Consumer Sciences (FACS) within the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS). 

The DI program is a full-time, 9-month program, and will start the week before the fall semester begins at Western Kentucky University. The program accepts ten (10) interns each year.  Students will complete 32 weeks of supervised practice, with 12 weeks devoted to Medical Nutrition Therapy, 10 weeks to Community Nutrition, and 10 weeks to Foodservice Systems Management. Supervised practice hours are 40 hours/week. The program includes 1208 hours of dietetic supervised practice experiences with a concentration in Community Nutrition. 

This DI is a post-baccalaureate program, leading to a Graduate Certificate in Dietetic Practice. The 12-hour graduate certificate will include the following didactic courses:

Interns will be required to attend the one-week orientation class, FACS 581 Professional Preparation for a Dietetic Internship, which will precede the start of the University fall semester. Part of the FACS 587 Seminar in Concepts and Methods of Dietetic Practice course will be online with the course culminating the last week of the internship in which the interns will have presentations, case studies, and an exit interview. For the remainder of the internship, students will be completing their required supervised practice hours and completing the other courses online (Foodservice Systems Management, Community Nutrition, and Medical Nutrition Therapy in Practice).
