The English department will invite finalists, their teachers, and family to campus for a reception and ceremony on February 15th where they will be recognized.

The winners will receive scholarships if they choose to major or minor in English at WKU and cash prizes whether or not they attend WKU. First Place: $500 Scholarship and $200 cash; Second Place: $300 Scholarship and $100 cash; Third Place: $200 Scholarship and $50 cash. Submissions are due January 17th.

Prompt: Imagine that the main character or speaker of your creative piece is a proverbial fish out of waater. They are new to the place they are interacting with and, for some reason, they don't quite belong. Imagine that this character knows nothing about America in 2019. In your poem/short story/nonfiction piece/short script introduce that character to 2019 America in some way. What would they think of this place? Would it seem strange or odd to them? Would they want to stand out or blend in? What conflicts might they come up against? 750 words maximum for poems, short fiction or nonfiction pieces, or 3-5 pages for a script (play or screenplay).
