List of Scholarships

This list is not comprehensive. Applications will be considered for all scholarships, listed and not listed. 

Our departmental scholarships are designed for current students at WKU. While the scholarships listed are not available for upcoming Freshmen, there are many opportunities available to consider. The Financial Aid page lists general scholarships and TopDollar has other possibilities as well.

Prerequisites

FRANK L. ATKINSON SCHOLARSHIP

First Year Creative Writing/Arts Scholarship

This scholarship is administered by Potter College   and has separate deadlines and instructions.

  • English major who is active in the department
  • Senior standing
  • Resident of the state of Kentucky
  • Overall GPA of 3.0+
  • English GPA of 3.0+
  • Students who pay dues to social societies are ineligible.
MARY LUCILLE SCOTT SCHOLARSHIP
  • English major
  • Resident of Kentucky
  • Top 25% of high school graduating class
  • Overall GPA of 3.0+
  • English GPA of 3.0+

 *Can be renewed for up to four (4) years

THOMAS G. JONES SCHOLARSHIP
  • English major or minor (preferably in creative or professional writing)
  • Sophomore standing or above
  • Overall GPA of 3.0+
  • English GPA of 3.0+

*Can be renewed for up to four (4) years

NOMA DUNN SCHOLARSHIP
  • English major or minor (specifically grammar, semantics, usage)
  • Aspiring to teach (not specific to high school)
  • Good character
  • Willing to work
  • Overall GPA of 3.0+
  • English GPA of 3.0+
PAT AND WALLACE NAVE SCHOLARSHIP
  • English major
  • Junior, senior standing, or graduate student
  • Overall GPA of 3.0+
  • English GPA of 3.0+
  • Students who pay dues to social societies are ineligible.
EARL A. MOORE SCHOLARSHIP
  • English major
  • Resident of Kentucky
  • Overall GPA of 3.0 +
  • English GPA of 3.0+
DR. KAREN PELZ SCHOLARSHIP
  • Creative or Professional Writing major or minor
  • Senior standing
  • Overall GPA of 3.3+
  • English GPA of 3.3+
JIM WAYNE MILLER SCHOLARSHIP
  • Creative Writing major or minor
  • Junior or senior standing
  • Overall GPA of 3.2+
ADDIE HOCHSTRASSER ESTATE FUND FOR   THE JIM WAYNE MILLER SCHOLARSHIP IN   CREATIVE WRITING
  • Creative Writing major or minor
  • Junior or senior standing
  • Overall GPA of 3.2+
  • Full-time student
  • Must possess the personal qualities of character, integrity, dependability, industriousness, and human compassion, which produce leaders
DR. NANCY HIGHTOWER DAVIS SCHOLARSHIP
  • English major
  • Sophomore standing or above
  • Overall GPA of 3.2+
  • Full-time student
  • Must possess the personal qualities of character, integrity, dependability, industriousness, and human compassion, which produce leaders

BETTY JEAN AND DOUG MOSLEY SCHOLARSHIP 
  • Full-time student at WKU
  • In pursuit of a degree in the English department
  • Overall GPA of 2.5+
  • Must possess the personal qualities of character, integrity, dependability, industriousness, and human compassion, which produce leaders and merit the honor of the award

*Financial need is an important consideration

PATRICIA MINTON TAYLOR SCHOLARSHIP
  • Full-time junior or senior at WKU majoring in English with a literature concentration
  • Overall GPA of 3.0+
  • English GPA of 3.5+
COLONEL EDGAR BRYANT AND EDITH R. STANSBURY SCHOLARSHIP FUND
  • Must be a full-time student majoring in English, within the WKU Department of English, within PCAL
LEE LITTLE SCHOLARSHIP FUND
  • Must be a full-time junior or senior from the Commonwealth of Kentucky
  • Overall GPA of 3.5+
  • Must be majoring in English with an interest in teaching at the secondary or collegiate level
JIM & LANA FLYNN STUDY ABROAD   SCHOLARSHIP FUND
  • Must be a full-time sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in English literature or English for Secondary Teachers or a graduate student specializing in literature within the department of English in PCAL
  • Overall English GPA of 3.3+
  • Preference will be given to students applying to programs led by WKU English faculty members and to students without access to other study abroad scholarships
  • Must submit an essay and most recent unofficial transcript
EVA RUSH LEE SCHOLARSHIP FUND
  • Full-time junior or senior
  • Resident of Kentucky
  • Must complete requirement for certification to teach English in public education systems in Kentucky following graduation
EARL A. AND CLEO B. MOORE—TERRENCE   E.  AND SARAH D. KELSAY STUDENT AID   FUND
  • Full-time student majoring in English within PCAL
GORDON WILSON SENIOR SCHOLARSHIP   FUND
  • Full-time student majoring in English within PCAL
