From the Department Head
Welcome to our homepage! WKU's English Department is a lively, engaging, and welcoming place to study language, literature, writing, and culture. Our faculty have diverse interests including literature from medieval to modern; fiction, poetry, script, and memoir writing; teaching high school English as a second language; technical, business, and professional writing; and film studies and production.
To complement the classroom work, we have so many other activities that you won't be able to take advantage of them all: the English Club, the Film Club, our Creative Writing Readers Series, the Undergraduate Literature and Culture Conference, Zephyrus (our undergraduate literary magazine), The Ashen Egg (our undergraduate journal of English scholarship), and many internship and study abroad opportunities.
What's more, we have small classes and a welcoming faculty who enjoy working individually with students and helping them to do their best to achieve departmental learning outcomes. We prepare our students for a host of professional opportunities: editing/publishing, professional writing, or teaching; working in business and for non-profits; attending graduate school in literature, composition/rhetoric, creative writing, film, or law; and working in student services. In fact, the reading, writing, and critical thinking skills our students learn prepare them for pretty much whatever career they choose. (Check out our careers page.) We offer small town friendliness and big-city opportunities. Come for a visit! I think you will like what you find.
