Dr. Andrea Kirk-Jenkins an Assistant Professor in the Department of Counseling and Student Affairs at Western Kentucky University.  She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology, a Master of Science in Education degree with a concentration in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, as well as a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Counselor Education and Supervision from Old Dominion University. 


Dr. Kirk-Jenkins’ research interests include eating disorders; college student population; addictions, crisis counseling; and supervision and professional development.  She has authored five peer-reviewed articles in scholarly journals over the past five years. Dr. Kirk-Jenkins feels passionate about supporting student’s research endeavors and is currently serving on multiple dissertation and thesis committees. Additionally, Dr. Kirk-Jenkins has conducted 23 presentations and workshops at the national, regional, state, and local levels including the National Conference for the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES), The National Conference for the Association for Adult Development and Aging (AADA), and the Regional Conference for the Southern Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (SACES).

Clinically, Dr. Kirk-Jenkins is a nationally certified counselor (NCC) and has seen clients with a variety of clinical concerns. Her experience includes working on a college campus in counseling services, working in community-based counseling including in-home treatment, as well as within the local community services board. Dr. Kirk-Jenkins’ clinical passion lies within crisis counseling, particularly sexual assault, interpersonal violence, suicidal, and homicidal ideation. For six years, she worked for a sexual assault and crisis counseling center where she saw clients, worked on the emergency after hours hotline, provided court accompaniment for protective orders, hospital accompaniment for physical evidence recovery kits (PERKS) after a sexual assault, and later served as an on-call supervisor for the center.

Dr. Kirk-Jenkins currently serves as the Clinical Mental Health program coordinator as well as the coordinator for the addictions certificate. She holds a seat on the Senate Executive Committee as well as the Senate. Dr. Kirk-Jenkins is an invited member on the Eating Disorder Task Force at Western Kentucky University, as well as serves on the College and University Academic Complaint Committee, the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences (CEBS) Curriculum Committee as well as the CEBS Post Tenure Review Committee. Dr. Kirk-Jenkins also serves as the co-faculty advisor for the Chi Sigma Iota (CSI) honor society.

Dr. Kirk-Jenkins was nominated and invited into the Faculty Leadership Year (FLY) program as a leadership fellow for the 2017-2018 academic year with 15 other professors across campus. Additionally, she has taken on leadership roles within her professional associations. Currently, she serves as the co-editor for SACES newsletter as well as consistently serving as a proposal conference reviewer for ACA, ACES, SACES, and AADA.

Currently, Dr. Kirk-Jenkins main focus is assisting in developing competent and passionate counselors. She teaches both core and specialty courses including but not limited to: Mental Health Diagnosis and Treatment Planning, Crisis Counseling, Techniques in Counseling, Eating Disorders in Counseling (a course she recently developed), Assessment and Diagnosis in Addictions, Counseling Theories, Practicum, and Internship. She also serves as an advisor to those in the Clinical Mental Health program as well as those completing the addictions certificate. Dr. Kirk-Jenkins utilizes a strength-based approach to assist students in reaching their full potential.
