Internships

Internships

AD 489 (18 hours in the major. Permission of instructor. Majors only.)
COMM 489 (COMM 200 and 300 with a C or better. Junior standing. Majors only.)
PR 489 (Permission of instructor. Public Relations majors only.)

Current research finds that, all things being equal, if college graduates seeking career positions have taken an internship with that company or a similar one, they are the ones offered the jobs (National Association of Colleges and Employers, Job Outlook 2018, https://www.naceweb.org/talent-acquisition/candidate-selection/what-employers-seek-on-a-resume/). The Department of Communication is committed to enhancing the employability of its graduates through internships.

Each internship course engages students in significant professional experience, appropriate to their major. Interns typically work 200 or more hours at their internship sites. Typically, students find their own internships. Please consult with your major professors or Dr. Helen Sterk if you need ideas for potential internship sites.  Here is where some of our students have interned.

Within the Department of Communication, Imagewest, an award-winning student-run Advertising + Public Relations agency,  trains interns. Interns works with real-world clients to learn to work in an agency environment at the same pace as industry professionals. Collaboration and relentless self-improvement are core to the Imagewest work ethic. Students from any of the department’s programs are welcome to apply.

Application Process:

To apply for the competitive internship at Imagewest, apply online at https://imagewestagency.com. When the interns are chosen, Imagewest’s manager, Kara Williams Glenn releases students for registration.

For all other internships, locate your site and make an appointment to review your plan with Dr.Sterk.  After the review, submit the application form and provide Dr. Sterk with your unofficial transcript from TopNet. In addition, have your supervisor submit the learning contract. Once all three pieces are approved, you will be released to register for the class.
