Dr. Derick Strode

Dr. Derick Strode
- Assistant Director, Academic Services

Derick has worked at The Gatton Academy since fall 2008.  His work involves connecting students to mentored research projects and helping students connect their Gatton Academy learning experiences to appropriate conferences and scientific meetings, scholarships, and competitions.

Inspired by his own experiences abroad as a student, Derick organizes and plans study abroad experiences for Gatton Academy students annually to Costa Rica for ecological field research, England for literature study, Italy and Greece for cultural immersion programs, and occasionally China.  Additionally, he coordinates the school’s STEM + Critical Language learning tracks in Arabic, Chinese, and Russian.

His research interests include assessing the impact of study abroad and experiential learning opportunities, monitoring trends in specialized secondary and post-secondary education, and travel-based learning experiences as they relate to all fields, particularly literature.

Derick holds the Educational Doctorate from Western Kentucky University.  He completed a dissertation studying the impact of Gatton Academy study abroad programs on participants’ views of belongingness and personal growth and development.  Derick also has a BA in English, an MAE in Student Affairs in Higher Education, a graduate certificate in International Student Services, and an MA in English.  In his English thesis, he wrote on matters of family, his father’s early onset Alzheimer’s disease, and the Kentucky experience in a series of creative non-fiction essays.
