No two days are alike here and that is a great thing, Whether it is helping a student choose between colleges, prom dates, or just what to have for dinner, our students always keep me on my toes. While a few may refer to me as “Mom!” and I’ll usually respond with “Child!” my role is sometimes administrative, parental, pastoral, and always flexible. The Gatton Academy is truly a community that has a family-like feel. We work hard to provide students an environment in which they are more than a name and a number but a story that is being written.
I grew up in Hart County and completed a B.S. in human resources management at WKU. My path to the world of student life and working with gifted students is slightly untraditional. Following graduation, I spent five years in retail management with Walgreens drug stores in the Nashville, TN area. I have been at The Gatton Academy since we opened in August 2007. I completed my Master’s degree in Leadership Dynamics in our early years and completed a capstone project titled “Increasing Emotional Intelligence: Building Strong Student Leaders at the Gatton Academy”. I enjoy watching our students discover themselves and grow in confidence and maturity during their time here. My role at the Academy involves managing the residential side of the program. The safety and security of our students is always my top priority. Students may sometimes think my favorite phrase is “fire hazard.”
Watching students discover the things they are passionate about never gets old. Working with this population is never boring or dull. The excitement they display is contagious. I encourage our students to strive to balance their academic lives with activities that benefit their overall well-being, not just academically but physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I’ve lost over 100 pounds during the time I’ve been at the Gatton Academy and I enjoy sharing how much happier a healthy lifestyle is with our students. Learning and exploring new things is just as important for adults as it is for our students. From leading a boot camp style exercise program, taking students to church with me on Sunday morning, performing emergency plumbing work at 1am, or just providing a listening ear; each day is just as unique as our students. I’m grateful for the opportunity to be a little part of their world for a time.
